At Last, Everydayness
oil on canvas
15” x 12” x 2”
2025
The everyday is something that happens whether we like it or not. Days go by, months pass away, and sometimes things look the same. What we can always count on is the fact that this happens and that things will happen to interrupt it. We can count on things pulling us out of our predictable routine just as much as we can count on things happening time and time again.
At Last, Everydayness consists of my every day. Days spent in the studio painting, researching artists and inspiration, or simply thinking about my topic and how to proceed. These paintings are a reflection of my every day. They consist of layers of confident brush marks as well as layers of covered up mistakes. They consist of marks made based on something I saw that day. I find that the process mimicked my own routine. These painting have layers just like my days do. There are marks made that I attempted to cover up just like words and actions that I wish I could undo. There are bright and colorful marks mimicking the energy and excitement I had. The outlines in certain paintings mimic the recognition of identified moments where everydayness was interrupted. There are marks mimicking the scribbles of a kid I babysit for. There are expressionistic references to things I saw at the time of creating these paintings. There are compositions that mimic artists whom I was looking at the time. These paintings are about my every day. They hold memories of babysitting mornings, hikes up mountains, Joshua trees, art class, and late-night studio time.
