Using a combination of acrylic paint, spray paint and ink pen, this painting asked for participation from the community. Beginning with a base layer of solid pink paint, the piece was first installed outdoors next to a public sidewalk, along with spray paint cans inviting viewers to collaborate. After layers were added, the piece was installed in a second public location indoors, along with paint markers, oil pastels and instructions prompting participation.
The colors and layered mark-making emulate a graffiti-like style, with the composition demonstrating collaborative efforts from the artist’s surrounding community. The piece questions ideas of authorship, asking “What role does the artist’s hand play in authorship?”
